God's Hand

Cheri Fuller

Once two women were sitting on a bench talking. One cried and said, “After all my years of serving, praying, and being obedient, why hasn’t God touched me? Why does he seem so far away?” She put her head in her arms and sobbed inconsolably.

All of a sudden she looked up and exclaimed, “He touched me! He touched me! I felt God’s hand! Oh, thanks be to God!” Then she looked at her friend and saw that she had her hand on hers.

“Oh, no, it’s just your hand, and I thought it was God’s.” The woman’s friend answered, “Yes, it was my hand. What did you think God would do—make a huge, long arm come out of heaven to reach you? God took the hand nearest to you and used that to touch you!”

Each time we are touched by friendship or supported by a hand of help or encouragement, these are the hands of God. Mother Teresa said that God has only our hands with which to bless the world. We hug, we support and comfort others, all with our hands. Yet in every action, God’s hand is involved and it is his Spirit inspiring us.

Joy

Sheila Walsh

I face a number of situations that lack closure. I see clearly that I have two choices. I can bring these to God and then spend the rest of the day trying to figure out how I can "make things happen". Or I can bring my requests before God's throne of grace with a prayer of thanksgiving and confidence in Him and wait in the Lord. The real difference is what happens in me after my initial prayer. If I make the first choice, I continue to worry and fret over the outcome. If I take the second route, the way by which Paul exhorts us to live, I come to an awesome promise. "The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

What a gift. The Word of God could not be clearer here. If we will relinquish control of our lives and place our trust in God with absolute confidence, the peace of God, which is beyond human understanding, will cover us, protecting our hearts and minds. This is "true joy"! Joy that G.K. Chesterton called "the giant secret of the Christian."

When you make a mistake...

Tracy Klehn, Growing Friendships

When you make a mistake you have the option of beating yourself up or throwing your hands up, laughing at yourself, and reminding yourself that this is an opportunity to grow in humility and to remember that God "gives grace to the humble" (Proverbs 3:34)

The other great thing about not taking yourself so seriously and growing in humility is that you are more likely to be able to extend grace to others, shrug off their mistakes, and not be so easily offended.

Sleep

Julie Ackerman

What God accomplishes in our bodies while we drift off to dreamland is nothing short of miraculous. While we do nothing, God replenishes our energy, rebuilds and restores our cells, and reorganizes information in our brains.

I'm sometimes tempted to believe the work I do while I'm awake is more important than the work God does while I sleep, but refusing God's gift of sleep is like telling Him that my work is more important than His.
