Revision is...

Revision is a matter of rewriting until what I write feels truthful, complete, and alive. - Georgia Heard

Maple Syrup

It takes forty gallons of maple sap to make one gallon of maple syrup. Maple sap is mostly water. To make syrup, you've got to boil off that water. Much of your writer's notebook is like that watery sap. You have to boil off lots of water in order to make the syrup of your writing dark, thick and sweet. - Donald Murray and Ralph Fletcher

The Ordinary

If I dismiss the ordinary --- waiting for the special, the extreme, the extraordinary to happen --- I may just miss my life. - Dani Shapiro, Still Writing: The Perils and Pleasures of a Creative Life

I pray because...

I pray because I can't help myself. I pray because I'm helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time - waking and sleeping. It does not change God - it changes me. - C. S. Lewis

For Him

No prayer is too hard for Him to answer, no need too great for Him to supply, no passion too strong for Him to subdue; no temptation too powerful for Him to deliver from, no misery too deep for Him to relieve. - Arthur Pink, The Attributes of God

At the moment though...

At the moment though, it is the room in which 32 children spent a year learning about things that matter: to be kind and have intellectual integrity, to be open and accepting of new ideas, to make reading and writing as natural a need as breathing, to think history as a story worth knowing. We have such important work before us, every day of the school year. Teaching matters. And the year, which seemed so long in September, seems to have been rather short after all. - Tara Smith, A Teaching Life

Rise & Shine

Rise and shine. I've always held such fondness for that sweet old phrase. As though we are all little Suns. As though we are all someone's Day. - Beau Taplin

It's yours, Lord

God wants me daily to hold out my house to Him with open hands and say its yours, Lord. - Linda Dillow

Write yourself. Invite children to do something you're already doing. If you're not doing it, Hey, the kids say, I can't wait to grow up and not have to write, like you. They know. And for the short term and the long term, you'll be doing yourself a favor by writing. All of us need it as a survival tool in a very complex world. The wonderful thinking about writing is that it separates the meaningless and the trivial from what is really important. So we need it for ourselves and then we need to invite children to do what we're doing. You can't ask someone to sing a duet with you until you know the tune yourself. - Ralph Fletcher

No matter what...

No matter what today entails, no matter what each moment holds, good things will happen. Good things always happen amidst the bad. You would think by now, with all that I have gone through, I would have learned that. You would think that I would have mastered the art of looking for the positive in all situations. But I haven't. And that is okay. It is okay for me to be angry at this situation. It doesn't mean that I have lost hope. In the midst of the pain and heartbreak that I have felt, I am looking towards the good. I am turning my face to Him and letting those words fall on me like rain. - Heather George
